Typography & Viewing Distance Guide

Quick answer

Use about 1 inch (2.5 cm) of letter height for every 10 feet (3 m) of viewing distance for comfortable reading; halve that for the absolute minimum. In practice: body text of roughly 24pt at 6 ft, 36pt at 10 ft, 60pt at 20 ft and 132pt at 50 ft on a 1080p display, with headlines about twice the body size. The chart and formula below give exact values, and the calculator at the end computes them for your screen.

Getting text size right is critical for digital signage effectiveness. Too small and viewers can't read it; too large and you waste valuable screen space. This guide provides formulas, charts, and best practices for optimal typography at any viewing distance.

The Viewing Distance Formula

Quick Reference Chart

6 ft (2m)24pt48pt16pt
10 ft (3m)36pt72pt24pt
15 ft (5m)48pt96pt32pt
20 ft (6m)60pt120pt40pt
30 ft (9m)84pt168pt56pt
50 ft (15m)132pt264pt88pt

The Formula

The chart above follows one line. Minimum body text in points is 12 plus 2.4 times the viewing distance in feet:

Minimum body text (pt) = 12 + 2.4 × viewing distance (ft)
Minimum body text (pt) = 12 + 7.9 × viewing distance (m)

Headline (pt) = 2 × body text
Fine print (pt) = body text × 2 / 3

Point sizes assume a 1080p canvas (1920 × 1080 px), where 1 pt is drawn as about 1.33 px. Double them on a native 4K canvas.

The physical cross-check is the signage rule of thumb: about 1 inch (25 mm) of letter height for every 10 feet (3 m) of viewing distance reads comfortably, and 1 inch for every 20 feet is the minimum.

Comfortable letter height (in) = viewing distance (ft) × 0.1
Minimum letter height (in) = viewing distance (ft) × 0.05

Calculating Physical Size on the Display

The height of text on the screen depends on the display's pixels per inch (PPI), not on the point size alone:

Text height (px) = point size × 1.33 (1080p canvas)
Text height (in) = text height (px) ÷ display PPI

Example Calculation

Scenario: Display 30 feet from primary viewers

Step 1: Minimum body text from the formula
12 + 2.4 × 30 = 84pt (headline 168pt, fine print 56pt)

Step 2: Physical height on a 55" 1080p display (40 PPI)
84pt × 1.33 = 112 px → 112 ÷ 40 = 2.8 inches tall

Step 3: Check against the rule of thumb
30 ft × 0.05 = 1.5 in minimum, 30 ft × 0.1 = 3 in comfortable → 2.8 in passes

Step 4: Verify at the real distance before you publish

Display Size Impact

Text Size by Display Resolution

The same point size appears differently on different resolutions:

Point size (1080p canvas)1080p 55" (40 PPI)4K 55" (80 PPI)1080p 75" (29 PPI)4K 75" (59 PPI)
24pt (32 px)0.8"0.4"1.1"0.5"
36pt (48 px)1.2"0.6"1.7"0.8"
48pt (64 px)1.6"0.8"2.2"1.1"
72pt (96 px)2.4"1.2"3.3"1.6"
96pt (128 px)3.2"1.6"4.4"2.2"

Physical height = pixels ÷ PPI, with 1 pt drawn as 1.33 px. The 4K columns assume the same point size on a native 4K canvas, which is why the text is half the height; double the point size on 4K to match 1080p.

Impact: Higher PPI = smaller physical text at same point size

Text Hierarchy for Digital Signage

Formula: minimum body text (pt) = 12 + 2.4 × viewing distance (ft); headline = 2 × body; fine print = body × 2/3. Rule of thumb: 1 inch of letter height per 10 feet of viewing distance reads comfortably, 1 inch per 20 feet is the minimum.

The 3×5 Rule

For most digital signage:

  • Maximum 3 lines of text per message
  • Maximum 5 words per line
  • 3-5 seconds viewing time

Video Walls

For multi-screen video walls, calculate based on:

  • Total viewing distance (usually further)
  • Individual screen bezels (text shouldn't cross)
  • Viewing zones (near vs. far)
Example: 2×2 Video Wall (4× 55" displays)
Total size: ~110" diagonal
Typical viewing distance: 15-25 feet

Minimum body text: 60pt
Recommended body text: 72-84pt
Headlines: 144pt+

Outdoor Displays

Outdoor signage needs larger text due to:

  • Greater viewing distances
  • Environmental distractions
  • Brief attention windows

Outdoor Rule: Add 25-50% to indoor recommendations

Testing Your Typography

The "Squint Test"

  1. View your design from intended distance
  2. Squint your eyes
  3. If text disappears or blurs, increase size

The "Photo Test"

  1. Display your content on screen
  2. Step back to viewing distance
  3. Take a photo with your phone
  4. Review photo - if text is hard to read, increase size

The "5-Second Test"

  1. Show design to someone for 5 seconds
  2. Ask: "What was the main message?"
  3. If they can't recall, simplify or increase text

Accessibility Check

  • Test with vision impairment simulation
  • Verify contrast ratios with online tools
  • Consider color blindness (8% of males)
  • Check against WCAG 2.1 guidelines
