Install SignPlayer on an iPad

Quick answer

DigitalSignage.com SignPlayer runs on the iPad as a web player in Safari, with nothing to install from the App Store: open Safari, go to galaxy.signage.me/signplayer, tap Share > Add to Home Screen and open SignPlayer from the new icon. In SignStudio, click Register SignPlayer and enter the registration code the player shows to pair it, then assign a campaign in SignStudio. For a public screen: keep it on its charger, turn Auto-Lock off, and lock it to the player with Guided Access.

About the App Store app

An older SignagePlayer app by MediaSignage Inc is still listed on the App Store, but it was last updated in 2016. Use the web SignPlayer described on this page for new installs.

Install SignPlayer on an iPad

  1. Create a free account in SignStudio and build or pick a campaign. For a touch kiosk, add touch components to your presentation (Plus+); full kiosk and touch solutions are part of Enterprise.
  2. On the iPad, open Safari and go to galaxy.signage.me/signplayer.
  3. Tap the Share button, then Add to Home Screen, and confirm.
  4. Close Safari and open SignPlayer from the new Home Screen icon. It opens full screen, without the Safari address bar.

Pair the screen with your account

  1. Create a free account at SignStudio if you do not have one. It asks for an email and a password only, no credit card.
  2. Open SignPlayer on the iPad from the Home Screen icon.
  3. The player shows a registration code. In SignStudio, click Register SignPlayer and enter that code: the screen joins your account. Alternatively, tap register manually on the player and sign in with your DigitalSignage.com email and password.
  4. In SignStudio, assign a campaign to the new screen and publish it.
  5. The player downloads the campaign, caches it locally and starts playing. Screens 2 and 3 are added the same way and stay free.

DigitalSignage.com SignPlayer is controlled from SignStudio over a real-time socket connection. If a firewall blocks that, it falls back to HTTP polling, so you do not need a static IP address or any port forwarding. From then on you manage the screen remotely: live status, scheduling and automatic updates.

Run in kiosk / auto-start mode

iPadOS settings, not a DigitalSignage.com installer:

  1. Never lock. Settings, Display and Brightness, Auto-Lock: Never.
  2. Guided Access. Settings, Accessibility, Guided Access: turn it on and set a passcode.
  3. Open SignPlayer from the Home Screen and triple-click the side button (or the Home button) to start a Guided Access session. The iPad stays in the player until someone enters the passcode.
  4. Notifications off. Turn on Do Not Disturb or a Focus so alerts never cover the content.
  5. Power and mount. Keep the iPad on its charger in an enclosure that covers the buttons.
  6. For a fleet, supervise the iPads with an MDM and use its single-app or web-app kiosk settings so the player reopens after a restart.

Frequently asked questions

How do I set up an iPad as a digital sign?

Open Safari on the iPad, go to galaxy.signage.me/signplayer, add it to the Home Screen and open it from there. In SignStudio, click Register SignPlayer and enter the registration code the player shows to pair it (or tap register manually and sign in), then assign a campaign to it in SignStudio. Keep the iPad on its charger, turn off Auto-Lock and use Guided Access so visitors cannot leave the player.

Is there an iPad app?

SignPlayer runs on the iPad as a web app in Safari, so there is nothing to download from the App Store. An older SignagePlayer app is still listed on the App Store, but it was last updated in 2016; use the web SignPlayer for new installs.

How do I lock an iPad to the signage player?

Turn on Guided Access in Settings, Accessibility, Guided Access and set a passcode. Open SignPlayer from the Home Screen and triple-click the side or Home button to start a session; the iPad stays in the player until someone enters the passcode. A lockable enclosure that covers the buttons adds physical security.

Which iPads work?

Any iPad with a current version of Safari. DigitalSignage.com does not publish a model list for the iPad; test your campaign on the iPad you plan to use before buying hardware, especially for video-heavy layouts.

Is an iPad a good choice for a wall screen?

Usually not. An iPad suits countertop displays, check-in kiosks, meeting-room and door-side signs. For a wall screen larger than a tablet, an Android TV box, a Raspberry Pi or a mini PC behind a TV is the more practical setup.

Try it on your own screens, free

DigitalSignage.com, which publishes this guide, runs a permanent free plan: the first 3 screens are free forever (no credit card, no ads, no watermark, no time limit), then from $3 per screen per month on Plus+. Once an account has 4 or more screens, every screen is billed, so 10 screens cost $360 a year; Enterprise is priced per screen in the public price calculator. The free DigitalSignage.com SignPlayer runs on Windows, Mac, Android and Android TV, Chrome OS, Raspberry Pi, iPad or any modern web browser, so the hardware you already own usually works.
