Install SignPlayer on a Chromebox, Chromebook or ChromeOS Flex PC

Quick answer

DigitalSignage.com SignPlayer installs on a Chromebox, Chromebook or ChromeOS Flex PC as SignPlayer for Chrome OS: install it from the Downloads page of your free account, launch it and type the registration code shown on the player into SignStudio under Register SignPlayer to pair the screen. To make it auto-launch full screen with no way out, enroll the device in Google Admin and add a Chrome Enterprise Kiosk license, one per device.

Supported devices

  • Chromeboxes, about $300 to $700, many with HDMI plus DisplayPort. The tidiest Chrome option behind a display.
  • Chromebooks and Chromebases, including retired school Chromebooks.
  • ChromeOS Flex on old x86 PCs and Macs that meet Google's minimums. Flex is web only, with no Android apps or Google Play.

Install SignPlayer on Chrome OS

  1. If you are converting a PC or Mac, install ChromeOS Flex from Google first, then sign in to the device.
  2. Create a free account in SignStudio and build or pick a campaign.
  3. On the Chrome device, sign in to your account and open the Downloads page.
  4. Install SignPlayer for Chrome OS from there.
  5. Launch SignPlayer.

The Chrome OS install video walks through it.

Pair the screen with your account

  1. Create a free account at SignStudio if you do not have one. It asks for an email and a password only, no credit card.
  2. Launch SignPlayer on the Chrome device.
  3. The player shows a registration code. In SignStudio, click Register SignPlayer and enter that code: the screen joins your account. Alternatively, tap register manually on the player and sign in with your DigitalSignage.com email and password.
  4. In SignStudio, assign a campaign to the new screen and publish it.
  5. The player downloads the campaign, caches it locally and starts playing. Screens 2 and 3 are added the same way and stay free.

DigitalSignage.com SignPlayer is controlled from SignStudio over a real-time socket connection. If a firewall blocks that, it falls back to HTTP polling, so you do not need a static IP address or any port forwarding. From then on you manage the screen remotely: live status, remote snapshots, player version, scheduling and automatic software updates.

Run in kiosk / auto-start mode

Kiosk mode on ChromeOS is a Google feature managed in Google Admin, and it is paid.

  1. Buy a Chrome Enterprise Kiosk license for each signage device from Google or a Chrome Enterprise reseller. ChromeOS Flex devices need it too.
  2. Enroll each device in your Google Admin domain.
  3. In Google Admin, create an organizational unit for signage devices, for example one per site.
  4. Under the kiosk settings for that unit, add SignPlayer as the kiosk app and set it to auto-launch.
  5. Disable exiting kiosk, set the screen-off timeout to never, and fix the display resolution and rotation.
  6. Reboot the device and confirm SignPlayer launches full screen on its own.

Without the license, SignPlayer still runs as a normal app; you then handle sign-in and relaunching yourself.

Troubleshooting

ProblemFix
SignPlayer does not auto-launchCheck the device is enrolled, has a Kiosk license assigned, and sits in the organizational unit where SignPlayer is set as the auto-launch kiosk app
The kiosk option is missing in Google AdminThe device has no Chrome Enterprise Kiosk or Upgrade license. Chrome Enterprise Core (free) has no kiosk mode
ChromeOS Flex will not install or runs badlyCheck the machine is on Google's certified model list and meets the 64-bit, 4 GB RAM, 16 GB storage minimums. Very old integrated graphics fall below Google's performance bar
The screen turns offSet the screen-off timeout to never in the kiosk device settings
An Android app will not install on FlexExpected: ChromeOS Flex has no Android apps or Google Play. Use SignPlayer for Chrome OS from the Downloads page
A Chromebox has stopped getting updatesIt has passed its Auto Update Expiration date. Replace it, or plan the swap before buying refurbished stock
Content does not updateCheck the device is online and the campaign is published to that screen. SignPlayer falls back to HTTP polling behind strict firewalls

Frequently asked questions

Does SignPlayer run on Chrome OS and ChromeOS Flex?

Yes. SignPlayer runs on Chromebooks, Chromeboxes and any PC or Mac converted with Google's free ChromeOS Flex, and pairs with the same DigitalSignage.com account as Windows, Android, Raspberry Pi and iPad players.

How do I install SignPlayer on a Chromebook or ChromeOS Flex device?

Sign in to your DigitalSignage.com account, open the Downloads page, install SignPlayer for Chrome OS, launch it and type the registration code shown on the player into SignStudio under Register SignPlayer to pair the screen, then assign a campaign in SignStudio. The Chrome OS install video on the tutorials page walks through it.

Do I need a Chrome Enterprise license for digital signage?

For kiosk mode, yes. Auto-launching a signage app on any Chrome device, ChromeOS Flex included, needs a paid Chrome Enterprise Kiosk license per device. Google does not publish a price; one US reseller lists about $25 per device per year. Without it the player still runs as a normal app.

Can I turn old PCs into digital signage players with ChromeOS Flex?

Yes. Install ChromeOS Flex on an old 64-bit x86 PC or Mac that meets Google's minimums of 4 GB of RAM and 16 GB of storage, check it against Google's certified model list, then install SignPlayer from the Downloads page and pair the device.

Is digital signage on Chrome OS free?

ChromeOS Flex is free from Google, and DigitalSignage.com is free for your first 3 screens forever with no credit card. The Chrome Enterprise Kiosk license is a separate Google cost per device, needed only for kiosk auto-launch.

Try it on your own screens, free

DigitalSignage.com, which publishes this guide, runs a permanent free plan: the first 3 screens are free forever (no credit card, no ads, no watermark, no time limit), then from $3 per screen per month on Plus+. Once an account has 4 or more screens, every screen is billed, so 10 screens cost $360 a year; Enterprise is priced per screen in the public price calculator. The free DigitalSignage.com SignPlayer runs on Windows, Mac, Android and Android TV, Chrome OS, Raspberry Pi, iPad or any modern web browser, so the hardware you already own usually works.
