Install SignPlayer on Windows 10 and Windows 11
DigitalSignage.com SignPlayer installs on a Windows 10 or 11 (64-bit) PC as the free SignPlayer Desktop app: download it from the Downloads page of your free account, install it on the PC behind the screen, and type the registration code shown on the player into SignStudio under Register SignPlayer to pair the screen. Minimum: Core i3 or Ryzen 3, 4 GB RAM, 64 GB SSD. For an unattended screen, set auto-login, let SignPlayer start with Windows, and turn off sleep.
Requirements
| Item | Minimum | Recommended |
|---|---|---|
| Windows | Windows 10, 64-bit | Windows 11, or Windows IoT Enterprise LTSC for a dedicated player |
| Processor | Intel Core i3 or AMD Ryzen 3 class | Intel Core i5 or AMD Ryzen 5 |
| Memory | 4 GB RAM | 8 GB RAM |
| Storage | 64 GB SSD (an SSD, not a hard disk) | 128 GB or larger SSD |
| Video output | HDMI or DisplayPort to the screen | One video output per screen driven from this PC |
| Network | Wired Ethernet where possible | Wired Ethernet |
Most office PCs made in the last eight years qualify. The recommended build matters for 4K video, many zones or several screens from one machine.
Supported devices
- Desktop and small form factor PCs running Windows 10 or 11, 64-bit.
- Mini PCs mounted behind the display on a VESA bracket, from N100-class boxes to Intel NUC-class machines, roughly $110 to $800. The right choice for heavy HTML5 layouts, many zones, touch screens, 4K and multi-display output.
- Laptops for a pilot only. The lid, battery and built-in screen make them a poor permanent fixture.
- Windows IoT Enterprise LTSC devices, the best fit for screens that must run unattended for years.
Install SignPlayer on Windows
- Create a free account in SignStudio and build or pick a campaign.
- On the PC behind the screen, sign in to your account and open the Downloads page.
- Download SignPlayer Desktop for Windows and run the installer.
- Launch SignPlayer when the installer finishes.
- Connect the screen over HDMI or DisplayPort. With several outputs, set Windows to extend the displays, not mirror them.
The Windows install video shows the same steps.
Pair the screen with your account
- Create a free account at SignStudio if you do not have one. It asks for an email and a password only, no credit card.
- Launch SignPlayer Desktop on the PC.
- The player shows a registration code. In SignStudio, click Register SignPlayer and enter that code: the screen joins your account. Alternatively, tap register manually on the player and sign in with your DigitalSignage.com email and password.
- In SignStudio, assign a campaign to the new screen and publish it.
- The player downloads the campaign, caches it locally and starts playing. Screens 2 and 3 are added the same way and stay free.
DigitalSignage.com SignPlayer is controlled from SignStudio over a real-time socket connection. If a firewall blocks that, it falls back to HTTP polling, so you do not need a static IP address or any port forwarding. From then on you manage the screen remotely: live status, remote snapshots, player version, scheduling and automatic software updates.
Run in kiosk / auto-start mode
These are standard Windows features, not a DigitalSignage.com installer. Use the one that matches your edition.
- Auto-login and auto-start (any edition). Create a dedicated local user that signs in automatically, let SignPlayer start with Windows, and in Settings turn off sleep, screen blanking and notifications.
- Assigned Access (Windows 10 and 11 Pro, Enterprise, IoT). Settings, Accounts, Other users, Set up a kiosk runs one app full screen for a kiosk account. The wizard only offers apps that Windows supports as kiosk apps; if SignPlayer is not listed on your build, use option 1 or 3.
- Shell Launcher (Windows IoT Enterprise and Enterprise). Replaces the Windows shell with SignPlayer, so nothing else ever appears on screen, and relaunches it if it closes.
- Unified Write Filter (Windows IoT Enterprise). Discards changes to the system drive on every reboot, which keeps a player identical for years. Exclude the player's cache folder so downloaded content survives a restart.
- Windows Update active hours. Set them to your opening hours so restarts happen at night.
In the BIOS, enable power on after AC loss so the PC restarts by itself after a power cut. Then pull the plug once and watch the screen come back unaided.
Troubleshooting
| Problem | Fix |
|---|---|
| SignPlayer does not start after a reboot | Check the signage user signs in automatically and that SignPlayer is set to start with Windows. A PC that waits at the login screen never starts the player |
| The PC stays off after a power cut | Enable power on after AC loss (or restore on AC power) in the BIOS or UEFI |
| An update screen or restart appears during opening hours | Set Windows Update active hours to your opening hours, or use Windows IoT Enterprise LTSC |
| Notifications or pop-ups cover the content | Turn off notifications for the signage user, or use Shell Launcher so the desktop never loads |
| Video stutters at 4K or with many zones | Use the recommended build: Core i5 or Ryzen 5, 8 GB RAM, SSD. Update the graphics driver |
| A second screen shows the same content | Set Windows display settings to extend, not duplicate, then assign each output its own screen in SignStudio |
| Content stopped updating | Check the PC has internet and that the campaign is published to that screen. Behind a strict firewall SignPlayer falls back to HTTP polling, so no ports need opening |

Frequently asked questions
Is there a DigitalSignage.com player for Windows?
Yes. SignPlayer Desktop is a free standalone application for Windows 10 and Windows 11 (64-bit). Download it from the Downloads page in your free account, install it on the PC behind the screen, type the registration code shown on the player into SignStudio under Register SignPlayer to pair it, and manage the screen remotely from SignStudio.
What PC do I need for Windows digital signage?
At minimum Windows 10 64-bit, an Intel Core i3 or AMD Ryzen 3 class processor, 4 GB of RAM and a 64 GB SSD. For 4K video, many zones or several screens from one PC, use Windows 11 or Windows IoT Enterprise LTSC with a Core i5 or Ryzen 5, 8 GB of RAM and a 128 GB or larger SSD.
How do I make SignPlayer start automatically on Windows?
Create a dedicated local user that signs in automatically, let SignPlayer start with Windows, and turn off sleep, screen blanking and notifications. For a stricter lockdown, Windows IoT Enterprise Shell Launcher replaces the desktop with SignPlayer and relaunches it if it closes.
Can one Windows PC drive several screens?
Yes. A single SignPlayer Desktop supports as many screens as the PC has video outputs, so a small PC with two or three HDMI or DisplayPort outputs can run a row of menu boards or a small video wall.
Does the Windows player work without internet?
Yes. SignPlayer Desktop downloads the campaign to the PC and plays it from the local cache, so an outage does not interrupt playback. The connection is needed for setup, new content and remote monitoring.
Try it on your own screens, free
DigitalSignage.com, which publishes this guide, runs a permanent free plan: the first 3 screens are free forever (no credit card, no ads, no watermark, no time limit), then from $3 per screen per month on Plus+. Once an account has 4 or more screens, every screen is billed, so 10 screens cost $360 a year; Enterprise is priced per screen in the public price calculator. The free DigitalSignage.com SignPlayer runs on Windows, Mac, Android and Android TV, Chrome OS, Raspberry Pi, iPad or any modern web browser, so the hardware you already own usually works.
