Digital Signage
on Mac

Turn a Mac mini or iMac into a digital signage player. The free SignPlayer desktop app for Mac installs in minutes, keeps playing from its local cache when the internet drops, and one Mac can drive as many screens as it has video outputs. Design and schedule everything in SignStudio from any browser.

Three Ways to Run DigitalSignage.com on a Mac

DigitalSignage.com is a hosted cloud platform, running since 2006: you build campaigns in the SignStudio web editor, and a SignPlayer shows them on the screen. On a Mac you have the native desktop player, a browser player, or ChromeOS Flex on an older machine. All of them are managed from the same account, alongside Windows, Android TV, Chrome OS, Raspberry Pi, iPad and Linux screens.

1. SignPlayer Desktop for Mac

The native application. Installs on any Mac running a currently supported macOS, starts at login, plays from its local cache during internet outages, and supports as many screens as the Mac has video outputs. The right choice for permanent installations.

2. Browser player

Open the SignPlayer web player in Safari or Google Chrome and run the browser full screen. The fastest way to test on a Mac you already own; you handle auto-login and restarting the browser yourself.

3. ChromeOS Flex on an older Mac

A Mac that no longer gets macOS updates can run Google's free ChromeOS Flex and become a managed Chrome OS player. Kiosk mode there needs a Chrome Enterprise Kiosk license per device.

Which Mac?

Any Mac running a currently supported version of macOS can run SignPlayer Desktop. The form factor matters more than the specification.

Mac mini behind the display

  • No screen, battery or lid to worry about; mounts behind the display or in the cabinet
  • Handles heavy multi-zone layouts and 4K content comfortably
  • Drives several screens from one machine, one per video output
  • Wired Ethernet where possible for the most reliable updates

iMac or MacBook

  • An iMac works where its own display is the signage screen, for example a reception desk or a counter
  • A MacBook is fine for a pilot, but the lid, battery and built-in screen make it a poor permanent fixture
  • Turn off sleep and the screen saver, and set the player to start at login
  • An older Mac can be repurposed with ChromeOS Flex instead of being retired

Set the Mac Up to Run Unattended

These are standard macOS settings, not a DigitalSignage.com installer:

  • Automatic login: create a dedicated user for the screen and set it to log in automatically (System Settings, Users & Groups).
  • Start at login: add SignPlayer to that user's Login Items so it opens after every restart.
  • Never sleep: in the Energy or Lock Screen settings, prevent automatic sleeping and turn the screen saver off; set the display to never turn off.
  • Quiet: turn notifications off for the signage user and schedule software updates outside opening hours.
  • Network: wired Ethernet where possible; Wi-Fi works, and the local cache covers short outages either way.

Whichever Mac you choose, every screen is managed remotely from one SignStudio account with the same scheduling, playlists, multi-zone layouts and live data widgets as every other platform. The Mac digital signage guide in our docs has the step-by-step version.

Frequently Asked Questions

Last updated October 14, 2026. Published by DigitalSignage.com (MediaSignage Inc., since 2006).

Is there a DigitalSignage.com player for Mac?

Yes. SignPlayer Desktop has a Mac version: a standalone application you download from the Downloads page in your free SignStudio account, install on the Mac behind the screen, and sign in once to pair. From then on the screen is managed remotely, and it keeps playing from its local cache when the internet connection drops.

Which Mac should I use as a digital signage player?

A Mac mini is the usual choice: it mounts behind the display, has no screen or battery of its own, and handles heavy multi-zone layouts and 4K content comfortably. Any Mac running a currently supported version of macOS can run SignPlayer Desktop; an iMac works where the built-in display is the signage screen.

Can an old Mac still be used for digital signage?

Yes. A Mac that no longer receives macOS updates can be turned into a managed player with Google's free ChromeOS Flex, which DigitalSignage.com supports through its Chrome OS player. Kiosk mode on ChromeOS needs a Chrome Enterprise Kiosk license per device; without it the player still runs as a normal app.

Can one Mac drive several screens?

Yes. A single SignPlayer Desktop supports as many screens as the Mac has video outputs, so a Mac mini with two display outputs can run two menu boards or a two-screen wall from one installation.

Is digital signage on Mac free with DigitalSignage.com?

Yes, for the first 3 screens. Every account gets its first 3 screens free forever with no credit card, no ads and no watermark, plus 1 GB of cloud storage. Additional screens on Plus+ start from $3 per screen per month with volume pricing in the public calculator, and a one-time $895 mediaSERVER license is available for on-premise installations.

Does the Mac player keep working without internet?

Yes. SignPlayer Desktop downloads your campaign to the Mac and plays it from the local cache, so an internet outage does not interrupt playback. The connection is needed for setup, for new content and schedules, and for remote monitoring.
